I was sent last summer by Scottish Wildlife Trust to photograph and interview people on the west coast who make their lives directly or indirectly from the sea in response to the consultation on proposed Marine Protected Areas in Scotland.
I focused on Assynt and Coigach and met a wonderfully diverse range of folk, including marine tour guides, creel fishermen, scallop diver, anglers, hoteliers and the last inhabitants of the Summer Isles. They were all united by a singular passion for the sea and a deep concern about parlous state of the marine environment.
I recorded their opinions on the proposed Marine Protected Areas in five photo stories for SWT’s Living Seas Campaign. These are few of the images from a memorable road trip.
